ECOS CONCORDIA — SPACE ANALOG PROGRAM
ECOS Concordia™ is a space analog of Concordia College located at Concordia Language Villages near Bemidji in northern Minnesota. Set within an isolated habitat and surrounded by extensive terrain for exploration, ECOS provides a distinctive environment for analog astronaut training, scientific research, technology testing and EVA field operations, particularly under challenging northern Minnesota winter conditions. The habitat provides infrastructure to support crew-based missions, including a science laboratory, communications, exercise equipment, medical resources, sustainable habitat systems, backup power, kitchen facilities and food-growing capabilities including microgreens and mushrooms. The surrounding environment extends operations beyond the habitat, enabling crews to undertake EVA exploration and realistic field-based activities while experiencing many of the operational challenges associated with living and working in an isolated environment.
Through the MMAARS–ECOS eXplorerNAUT™ program, these capabilities are integrated into MMAARS' multi-crew, multi-habitation analog astronautics architecture. Multiple crews can train, conduct research, and execute mission operations under common training standards, SOPs, research protocols and data frameworks, while structured rotations and crew handovers provide opportunities for repeated protocol execution and cross-crew comparison. Together, ECOS provides the physical analog environment while MMAARS provides the standardized training, research, and operational architecture, creating a scalable platform for increasingly complex analog astronaut missions and research supporting future human exploration.
